End to end product development of a home variant of a EMG/EEG product suite to stimulate pelvic muscles to address incontinence

Case Study

Customer: Client, Netherlands

About Client

The client is a leading medical device manufacturer specializing in pelvic health devices. They engaged iOrbit to develop a low-cost consumer variant of their pelvic health clinical product for doing pelvic floor exercises at home.

Client’s Challenge

The client's clinical pelvic health product is intended for use in a clinical environment by specialized healthcare professionals like the Pelvic Floor Therapist (PFT) for the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions. Many patients require daily training exercises for the pelvic floor. As the clinical variant must be operated by a therapist, the patient cannot do pelvic floor exercises at home performed with or assisted by the client's product.

Due to the nature of pelvic health treatment, patients are required to make frequent visits to the clinic. Any lapse in these visits affects the impact and effect of the treatment, thereby lengthening the duration of the overall treatment. In addition, the clinical variant is a high-cost device.

iOrbit Solution

To address the challenges, iOrbit proposed an at-home use variant of the existing clinical product that is easy to operate with a user-friendly Android mobile application. In addition, the training data is made available on iOrbit’s proprietary IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) cloud platform accessible to healthcare professionals with the help of a user-friendly web application.

While designing the solution, we focused on:

  • Effectiveness of treatment equivalent to the clinical product
  • Ease and safety of use by non-clinical users at home
  • Availability of necessary training-only features to ensure patient safety

iOrbit’s solution comprised of:

  • Treatment device with existing proprietary probe (from the clinical product)
  • Bluetooth connected mobile application for patients to download the prescribed training program and initiate the training
  • Cloud platform for data storage and analytics
  • Web application for clinicians to prescribe the training program with clinical parameters, view the training results & patient progress, and adjust the training program if necessary
